SunWatch Site Manager

Location: SunWatch Indian Village/Boonshoft Museum

Work Hours: Exempt, Full Time

Reports To: Curator of Anthropology and Exhibitions


Overview:

The SunWatch Site Manager directs and coordinates activities at SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park. This individual serves as the hub of communication between the Collections, Exhibits, Education, Facilities, Finance, and Guest Services Departments and their associated work at SunWatch; the Site Manager will be the main contact for inter-departmental efforts. The Manager is responsible for maintaining village reconstruction, updating content, giving/creating educational tours, working with the Native community, and facilitating research requests. This individual manages the volunteer program at SunWatch, aids in SunWatch specific special events, and serves as a SunWatch representative at DSNH functions. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and have excellent organizational skills. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in archaeology (specifically archaeology of the American Midwest), experience recruiting and managing volunteers, basic knowledge of retail/business management, and basic maintenance abilities. He/she must be comfortable utilizing social media platforms and with public speaking. He/she should be able to work independently as well as in group settings and adhere to reasonable deadlines to complete projects. The Site Manager must have an outstanding attitude and impart a model of enthusiasm. The SunWatch Site manager is required to work one weekend day during the week; the schedule options are Sunday-Thursday or Tuesday-Saturday.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops and gives tours to various groups
  • Maintains and grows volunteer program
  • Maintains outdoor reconstructions and exhibits
    • Supervise and staff harvest of natural materials for reconstruction work
    • Create village elements including tools, hides, and decorative elements
    • Maintain reconstruction garden
  • Assists Curator with the development of a reconstruction plan
  • Maintains a clean and orderly workplace that is inviting to visitors and creatively promotes SunWatch
  • Delivers and creates archaeology-based programs
  • Participates in preparation and writing of grants
  • Promotes SunWatch in local print, radio, and television media with Marketing
  • Communicates and coordinates with outside departments
    • Assists Collections staff with SunWatch collection
    • Assists Education staff with guided tours, classes, and programs
    • Assists Development with donor connections, tours, and solicitations
    • Assists Marketing/Rentals staff with special events, building rentals, marketing events, and promotions
    • Assists Exhibits staff with village reconstruction and exhibition work
    • Assists Facilities staff in building maintenance
  • Develops and executes strategies to enhance the visitor experience
  • Creates content for Social Media
  • Implements new public outreach opportunities and engages community partners
  • Maintains visitor records and safety information
  • Ensures site security; oversees opening and closing procedures
  • Completes other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities

Manages SunWatch Volunteers and Seasonal Reconstruction Workers. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Coordinates with other departments at the DSNH as well as our contractors.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience

Master’s Degree with at least 5 years of supervisory experience preferred or Bachelor’s degree and 10 years of related supervisory experience.  Background in archaeology is required.  Degree in Anthropology or Archaeology preferred, but not required.

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.  Applicant must be comfortable performing the duties associated with this job under various conditions.  The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; use ladders for high, precarious places; and outside weather conditions.  The employee is required to comply with all safety equipment provided for the work conducted, including ear and eye protection, chainsaw chaps, leather aprons for the use of draw knives, gloves, and in some cases closed-toe shoes.  The employee may also be regularly exposed to the sun, poison ivy, and annoying insects (bees, wasps, flies, and others).
